Great music, great artists, mixed sound quality...
This is quite a nice collection as far as the selections go. A variety of famous performers doing famous songs, some in their most famous renditions. The songs (listed by Amazon above) are in three groups, 13 by Irving Berlin, 14 by George Gershwin, 13 by Cole Porter. Each group begins with a recording by the composer. The recordings are from the '30s through the '50s.
The sound is mostly compressed, thin, and muffled, sometimes brittle. A treble boost helps some songs more than others. Some tracks appear to have been processed with a bit of artificial reverb (a device sometimes used to cover sonic defects). Even considering the limitations of some of the source material, the sound isn't as good as it could be. Still, it's always listenable, enough for me to enjoy it.
The packaging (my set has different artwork than the one pictured here) is designed to look deluxe, but it doesn't really. The booklet consists of a few photos and quotes from the composers, with a track list but no further information about the songs or recordings.
